Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chief selector the selector has confirmed that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches kicking off on November 21 in the WACA.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of participating.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations at play, not only his injury, but additional elements," the selector added.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he will feature a major part. Ideally starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Injury History

The captain missed the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of back injuries, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss several home seasons in four years.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the series.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games in any case. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for a short period, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
