Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of entry passages down to the facility... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their bravery," he said. "They were among numerous British troops deployed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the US military conducted what it called a "major assault" on IS targets in Syria, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
