The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
