Larian Studios Announce a New Divinity, Labeling it Their Biggest RPG Yet

The buzz surrounding The Game Awards was significant, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The mystery has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is creating a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal descent into chaos.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.

Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This phrasing hints that the team could be crafting a real-time experience as opposed to another tactical title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it pioneered the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, player agency, and complex character building—elements that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities you can achieve by choosing a distinct build with a specific history of choices.

The series is also famously permissive, enabling players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be solved in multiple ways, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you heeded something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a inventive way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can look forward to another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
