Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that individuals who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals using these treatments need to be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to original mass in about a year and a half.

Weighing Therapies

The study, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the heightened regain.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a intense return of cravings.

"It was like a switch activating and you become ravenous," said a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is higher among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers caution that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle management.
