An underground market for unlicensed weight-loss medications is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on communication apps, based on new investigations.
Experimental Drug Gaining Popularity Via Social Media
The experimental drug, which is still in research studies, is being advertised by online personalities for its alleged weight-reducing effects. Followers are urged to contact these accounts directly for source information, while also receiving promotional offers.
Active Commerce on Social Networks
Additionally, a robust trade exists on Telegram, where groups with numerous of participants share comparison images, injection guides and claims of rapid UK delivery. Vendors market the substance there before redirecting buyers to other platforms for purchases.
Learning About The Experimental Drug
This medication is an experimental injection developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug targets three gut hormones – GLP-1, GIP and pancreatic hormone. Preliminary studies indicate it could help patients reduce up to 25% of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted digitally as the next Ozempic.
Healthcare Experts Express Worries
Nevertheless, physicians and chemists have cautions that the sale of what remains an unapproved drug in the UK is a cause for concern and could result in users injecting products of uncertain source.
Some experts said the popularity for retatrutide could be connected to the increasing price of licensed slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.
Regulatory Status and Implementation
Marketing the unapproved drug on TikTok or messaging apps is illegal in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved medication that must not be marketed or distributed for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.
Several content creators try to circumvent the regulations by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled substance, but promotion and supply can still breach medicines, advertising, and consumer regulations, potentially leading to fines, prosecution or prison.
Service Response and Content Elimination
Based on the social media company, the platform has removed problematic content and prohibited related hashtags and search suggestions. The company stated it was dedicated to maintaining the service secure and investing in enhancing enforcement strategies.
Digital Marketplace Operations
Investigations also found groups with up to 9,000 members marketing retatrutide using the platform's built-in search feature, which functions like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” immediately brings up groups with thousands of members, filled with photos of slimming results, positive reviews and detailed instructions for preparing or administering at home.
After moments of joining one community, a vendor shared WhatsApp details, where most transactions occur. The seller sent an instruction manual and guaranteed shipping within 48 hours. When questioned whether the product was genuine, one vendor responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a photo of a supposed laboratory certificate. None inquired about weight, medical conditions or past usage.
Product Information and Costs
Within these groups, messages display dark colored parcels with postal service stickers, stating to contain fresh supplies. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Customers can select between dry substance containers, prepared at home with purified liquid, or pre-filled pens typically priced at 160 pounds for 20mg. When questioned how long a pen should last, sellers give contradictory answers ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.
Service Moderation and Safety Measures
A spokesperson for the messaging service said it regularly monitored harmful content on its service including content that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Healthcare Expert Warnings
“People are administering materials they cannot confirm. Even if the science behind retatrutide is sound, these online products may not include what they advertise,” stated a pharmacy expert, the head of pharmacy at Chemist4U.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor connected the increase in interest to recent price rises for authorized slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With prices increasing, patients are using online platforms. But fake treatments are highly risky. You cannot know what’s contained or whether the environment they were produced in was sterile,” she explained.
Her team has previously encountered patients harmed by personal administration from unverified suppliers. “We understand the disappointment, but purchasing from messaging apps or WhatsApp is taking chances with your well-being,” stated the doctor. “These materials could be impure or improperly measured.”
Producer Position
A representative from Eli Lilly stated retatrutide was in third stage clinical trials and had not been reviewed or approved by any regulatory agency globally. “Consequently at this time no one can sell [it] for personal consumption,” they said, noting that any item “falsely representing itself as a Lilly experimental product not yet authorized … may expose users to potentially significant medical dangers”.
