Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become not financially viable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
